All LPN licenses and expanded role certifications expire on December 31, 2009.
This year LPNs with expanded role certification who renew online will have the
ability to renew without being required to complete a separate recertification
application. The LPN renewal period is from October 1,
2009 to December 31, 2009. If a license
is renewed after December 29, 2009, the online licensure verification system may
not reflect the current status of the license until January 4, 2009, due to the
New Year's holiday. With this is mind, renew your license as soon as possible
within the renewal period to avoid last minute anxiety and unforeseen
difficulties.

Update for Advanced Practice Nurses
1.
Beginning September 1, 2009, the interview for all new nurse
practitioners or those relocating to this state, will no longer be
required. A brochure will be available on line for viewing, which will
review all the rules and regulations that had been previously discussed at
this interview.
2.
The requirement for 720 hours of monitored practice for all new
advanced practice nurses (with the exception of CRNA’s) will continue to be
required. The board requests that at the completion of this time the APRN
sends a letter attesting to this fact stating the dates included, the
signature of the person (MD or Certified NP) that was present and the
location(s) that this was accomplished at. This letter must be received
prior to application for controlled substance privilege.
3.
Controlled substance applications will now be processed more
frequently, on the 1st of each month, thus lessening the waiting
period for those applying.
It is my hope that these changes will assist the APRN
in their practice and the Board welcomes suggestions of other changes that
might be assistive to the APRN while continuing to provide the highest level
of care possible to the public at large. Call me if you have any questions
(601-944-4851), Dr. Linda Sullivan.

Mississippi Nursing Practice Law Amended
The Mississippi Nursing Practice Law, Mississippi Code of 1972, Section 73-15-5
was amended in the 2009 legislative session and deletes the requirement that
regulations relating to the practice of nursing be jointly promulgated by
the State Board of Medical Licensure. The amendment further defines
clinical nurse specialist practice, advanced nursing practice, clinical
nurse specialist and advanced practice registered nurse. “Section 73-15-20.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses” was created and prescribes the
qualifications for the licensure of advanced practice registered nurses.
The Mississippi Nursing Practice Law, effective July 1, 2009, is located on
this website under publications.

Rules and Regulations Adopted for APRN QA/QI Program
On May 19, 2009, a revision to
Chapter IV. 2.3c (3) of the Mississippi Board of Nursing Rules and
Regulations went into effect. The revision relates to a quality
assurance/quality improvement plan for APRNs. This specific revision is
listed below and a complete copy of the regulations may be found at this
website under “Practice,” “Laws, Rules and Regulations.”
(3) Each
collaborative/consultative relationship shall include and implement a formal
quality assurance/quality improvement program which shall be maintained on
site and shall be available for inspection by representatives of the
Mississippi Board of Nursing and Mississippi State Board of Medical
Licensure. The quality assurance/quality improvement program criteria shall
consist of:
a) Review by collaborative physician of a sample of charts that represent 10% or 20 charts, whichever
is less, of patients seen by the advanced practice registered nurse every month. Charts should represent the variety of patient types seen by the
advanced practice registered nurse. Patients that the advanced practice registered nurse and collaborating physician have consulted on during the
month will count as one chart review.
(b) The advanced practice registered nurse shall maintain a log of charts reviewed which includes the
identifier for the patients’ charts, reviewers’ names, and dates of review.
(c) Each advanced practice registered nurse shall meet face to face with a collaborating physician once
per quarter for the purpose of quality assurance.

Advanced
Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Joint Promulgation Changes
ATTENTION ALL APRN’S
As many of you know by now the bill that removes the
requirement for Joint Promulgation of all rules and regulations for advanced
practice with the Board of Medicine was passed and will be signed by the
Governor any day now. That means that as of July 1, 2009 all APRN’s will be
governed solely by the Board of Nursing and therefore subject to discipline and
rules as they are spelled out in the board’s rules and regulation. The passage
of this bill puts us in good company with 47 other states in the United States,
who have the Board of Nursing as its governing board for nurses, including
APRN’s.
With that said here are a
few words of caution and reminders for all APRN’s.
-
Collaborative practice is required for all
practice sites.
-
A QA/QI policy has also been approved by the board and
this will require that you and your collaborative physician review 10% or 20
charts per month, whichever is less, maintain a log of this review and have
quarterly meetings that are also noted in your log which should be kept on
site(s) and available for review. If you would like more information regarding
this please call the BON at 601-944-4851.
-
Any changes in practice location or collaborative
partners must be reported to the BON and all MD’s are required to file with the BOM all their collaborative relationships as well.
-
The privilege for controlled substance must be applied
for in this state and having a DEA number does not automatically grant
that right. See BON website for application.
-
The BON will be visiting a number of clinics this year
to assist in this transition. These visits are to assist you and not hinder you
so please be prepared to discuss your clinic policies and your QA plan with the
board of nursing visitor.
Finally, the Board of Nursing is very proud of all of its Nurses and
especially those APRN’s who are providing health care for the most underserved
patients often times in areas where there would otherwise be no health care at
all. Please feel free to contact us with comments or concerns at 601 944 4851.
Please continue to watch the Website as we continue to improve and update it.
